RETENTION RULES

We want you to finish your program, and the faculty (especially your adviser) and staff of the Department of Geography will support you. However, there are retention rules that we must abide by. Below are the guidelines for maintaining good academic standing among students of the BS Geography Program (approved in the Departmental Meeting, 5 June 2012).

1. Students should maintain a minimum general weighted average for their Geography subjects as well as for all courses that they are enrolled in.

> All majors should maintain a total general weighted average (TGWA) of 2.50, while having at least a general weighted average of 2.25 for all their Geography
subjects (GGWA). These averages will be checked every semester.
> Students who fail to achieve these averages have one (1) semester to meet the prescribed TGWA and/or GGWA.
> Students who would fail to meet either or both aforementioned averages can be given an additional semester to meet the Department’s standards provided that their reasons for appealing their case has merit. Decisions on such appeals are recommended by the committee and subject to the approval of the Chair.

2. A student can only take a particular Geography and non-Geography subject twice.

> Failing a particular course twice is grounds for expulsion from the program.
> If a student enrolls in a subject a second time and gets an incomplete, he or she should complete the said course within one academic year.
> This rule applies to all Geography and non-Geography courses except for Geography 109, Statistics 101/Social Science 103, Mathematics 17 and Mathematics 100 (See Proposal Numbers 3 and 4).

3. “Three-Strike” Rule for Mathematics courses, Statistics 101/Social Science 103 and Geography 109 courses.

> Students can only take the abovementioned courses a maximum of three times; failure to do so means dismissal from the program.

These rules and guidelines took effect in the second semester of Academic Year 2012–2013, and remain in effect.
